Onalabs, together with the “Centre d’Alt Rendiment de Sant Cugat (CAR)” and the “Institut Nacional d’Educació Física de Catalunya (INEFC)”, collaborate to validate the L10 device, which will mark a paradigm shift in the world of sports.

The sports sector linked to the use of wearables and fitness training apps is positioning itself as one of the booming markets with a 22% increase during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Good news for innovation in the Catalan sports sector. At the Centre d’Alt Rendiment (CAR) and the Institut Nacional d’Educació Física de Catalunya (INEFC), validations are being carried out these days for an innovation, driven by Onalabs, that will mark a before and after in athletes’ training methods.

Within sports training, blood lactate measurement is a key ally for monitoring fatigue and progressive adaptation to training, ultimately to performance. However, its current use is limited by the need to measure it by extracting blood samples through small earlobe pricks, lacking continuous and remote monitoring while training.

Onalabs has developed the L10 device capable of measuring lactate non-invasively, remotely, and continuously through sweat. L10 consists of a sweat collector patch and a very simple-to-use reader that connects via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to the mobile phone or smartphone for easy visualization and data collection. The information, processed by artificial intelligence, can be displayed through an application that will offer personalized recommendations to each athlete based on their physical condition and muscular and sports performance. In this way, L10 will become the perfect ally for athletes, allowing them to improve their performance to achieve better results, plan and adjust their training much better, and achieve greater exercise adaptation.

The importance of public-private collaboration

This new technology will be obtained thanks to the success of local public-private collaboration between leading training and sports institutions such as CAR and INEFC and technological innovation leaders like Onalabs. A collaboration that has been promoted through the Monclas project coordinated by Indescat and financed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism (MINCOTUR) within the AIE program of innovation grants for SMEs.

The sports sector: a booming market

A clear example of innovation emerging in Europe for a growing global market. With more than 50 million people regularly practicing sports in Europe, the sports market linked to training and its digitalization is positioning itself as one of the high-growth markets. A market that has not only been unaffected by Covid-19 but has seen a 22% increase in the use of wearables and fitness apps during the pandemic due to gym and sports centers being closed and people wanting to monitor themselves or have a sports routine through apps or wearables. Europe represents 38% of the growth of the sports training market, which will increase by more than 4.000 million of dollars [1] globally.
